Cineplexx, Sonic Youth, Teenage Fanclub and others @ Indie Travel Guide !
Hello! I just got my own book of the Indie Travel Guide in which I had been part and had recommend my favorite places in Barcelona. You Can't miss this book, by now only available in deutch.
Let's say you're visiting Toronto and you've done all the tourist-y stuff, but you have some extra time. At some point, you must think to yourself, "If only I knew what Tokyo Police Club do when they're in Toronto..." (Or not.)
That's exactly the line of thinking pursued by German publishers Rockbuch in a forthcoming volume called Indie Travel Guide. True to its name, Indie Travel Guide is a guidebook with info from bands about the places they frequent in the towns where they grew up or where they currently reside.
Other info on the book is scarce at the moment, but its first edition is set to hit Germany, Switzerland, and Austria this summer, with a North American release to follow at an undetermined later date.
Here's a sampling of the musicians to be included in the book, along with the cities they'll be exploring:
… And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (Conrad Keely) - Austin, TX
Architecture in Helsinki (Cameron Bird, Kellie Sutherland) - Melbourne, Australia
Art Brut (Eddie Argos, Jasper Future) - Bournemouth and Poole, England
Ash (Tim Wheeler) - New York, NY
Centro-Matic (Scott Danbom) - Denton, TX
Charlatans (Tim Burgess, Mark Collins) - Manchester, England
Cineplexx - Barcelona, Spain
Dresden Dolls (Amanda Palmer, Brian Viglione) - Boston, MA
Duke Spirit (Daniel Higgins)- London, England
Duke Spirit (Liela Moss) - Cheltenham, England
Duke Spirit (Toby Butler) - North London, England
Editors (Chris Urbanowicz) - Nottingham, England
Editors (Russell Leetch) - Birmingham, England
Figurines (Kristian Volden) - Copenhagen, Denmark
Gossip (Beth Ditto) - Portland, OR
Adam Green - New York, NY
Hot Hot Heat (Steve Bays) - Vancouver, British Columbia
Idlewild (Roddy Woomble) - Edinburgh, Scotland
Kaiser Chiefs (Peanut) - Leeds, England
Kooks (Hugh Harris) - Brighton, England
Sondre Lerche - Bergen, Norway
Maritime (Davey von Bohlen, Dan Hinz, Dan Didier, Justin Klug) - Milwaukee, WI
Maximo Park (Paul Smith, Lukas Woller) - Newcastle, England
Malcolm Middleton - Falkirk, Scotland
Nada Surf (Matthew Caws) - New York, NY
Pipettes (Gwenno) - Brighton, England and Cardiff, Wales
Rapture (Vito Roccoforte) - New York, NY
Razorlight (Björn Agren) - Lidköping, Sweden
Rogue Wave (Gram LeBron) - San Francisco, CA
Rogue Wave (Patrick Spurgeon) - Oakland, CA
Serena Maneesh (Emil Nikolaisen) - (Oslo, Norway)
Shout out Louds (Adam Olenius, Bebban Stenborg) - Stockholm, Sweden
Snow Patrol (Tom Simpson) - Glasgow, Scotland
Sonic Youth (Steve Shelley) New York, NY and Hoboken, NJ
Stars (Evan Cranley) - Montreal, Quebec
Strokes (Albert Hammond Jr.) - New York, NY
Swayback (Eric Halborg) - Denver, CO
Teenage Fanclub (Norman Blake) - Glasgow, Scotland
Tokyo Police Club (Dave, Josh, Greg, and Graham) - Toronto, Ontario
Voxtrot (Ramesh Srivastava) - Austin, TX
Cineplexx is a strange worldwide phenomenon. Born in Argentina, lured by the sounds of British indie pop, and residing in Barcelona, Spain all have had an influence on the songs that Sebastian Litmanovich writes. With help from friends Douglas Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), and Jad Fair, Cineplexx started to put together what would become, Picnic.
Sounding like the perfect twee pop album in a foreign language, Cineplexx jangles their way along light hearted airy tunes that are an absolute joy to listen too. Like the sound of wind whistling through trees on a clear and crisp autumn day, the songs are bright and invigorating. Complete with chamber pop orchestrations, string sections that would make Belle and Sebastian jealous and a certain degree of lushness that would make AM Radio glisten once again.
Picnic is pretty much the definition of what a perfect indie pop album sounds like. Sebastian and his troupe of jangly jokers have done a fantastic job of creating sugary sweet confections in the shapes of songs that will tug at your heart as much as your brain and that's without speaking hardly a word or English. While Sarah Records, Elephant Records and the like are obviously all influences on what helped Cineplexx write Picnic, Sebastian shapes those influences into a sound that is truly his own take on what the perfect pop album should sound like.
Picnic might be in a different language, but that barrier doesn't prevent this record from being a brilliantly bright and cheery record. Whether it's pure jangly goodness, instrumental meanderings, or synth fed pop songs, Cineplexx's Picnic is a beautfiully crafted, delicate, and charming pop record that crosses barriers and cultures with ease.

Hello!A few days ago was the premier of Incomodos (directed by Esteban Menis), an indie film made in Buenos Aires. All the music and sound was made by Martin Litmanovich (aka Leumann), my brother and permanent collaborator. I did some collaboration on the song for the ending titles as well.
Nicolás, Abril y Alfred tienen que ir a Miramar en pleno invierno. Nicolás va a tirar las cenizas de su abuelo, Abril va a visitar a su familia después de ocho años y Alfred viaja para participar en un concurso de baile sincronizado.

Tim's Top Ten Albums of 2008
September 1st, 2008 | 3:00 pm est | Tim Sendra
Figuring it would be pretty easy to beat the rush and be the first with a list of 2008's best albums, a mid-October post seemed be pretty safe. Sadly with the impending demise of the fine site Paper Thin Walls last week and their Best of 2008 post slated for tomorrow, the list had to happen now. Seriously though, it'll be hard for any future release to bust into this Ten. It's locked up tight!
Here goes in no particular order and because of time constraints, no witty comments either.
Times New VikingTimes New Viking - Rip It Off!
Best Song - "Drop Out"

Just back from Glasgow were, thanks again to my friend Mr. Ally Kerr I had played a concert with a deluxe band formed by Paul Tasker (of Doghouse Roses), Stuart Kidd on bongos (of St. Deluxe & BMX Bandits) and as special guest Duglas T. Stewart singing Tiger Trap.
I also joined Ally on his set for his song I Think I am Bleeding.
My visits to Glasgow every year (as last year) are becoming a nice tradition that I always look forward to repeat. I also had a nice talk with Stephen Pastel at his records store Monorail, and he seems to like the album.
See the photos from Glasgow here:

And here a youtube video of Tiger Trap live. Thanks to Gavin for the videos!
And here some more videos from Sunny Govan Radio were I did a small set at Tony's show, joined by Paul on guitars and Ally on tambourine. Here the song Hojas.

Interviews, Reviews & points of view on Picnic
I have lots of news and updates, I am putting photos together of my trip/gig at Glasgow with Ally Kerr, Duglas Stewart, Doghouse Roses' Paul Tasker & Kidd, but I wanted to post this at first.
Yesterday I did a kind of "song by song" interview on the phone with Paper Thin Walls, and here is the article that was published today: www.paperthinwalls.com
...In 2005, Sebastián Litmanovich, a.k.a. Cineplexx, was a minimalist electronic musician looking for a way out. The Barcelonan was playing glitchy scratches and rhythmic beeps at places like Spain's Sónar Festival, an event dedicated to "advanced music," but would be listening to Television and the Velvet Underground in his private life. He left his life of clinical bloops behind for the sunny, summer treat of seventh album Picnic, an album full of lush, catchy psychedelic bedroom pop, accented with colorful, otherworldly whispers about sleep, dreams and recreation. Many of the songs are about escape? "in a positive way," says Litmanovich, after apologizing for English being his second language. "That's why I thought it was appropriate to reinforce this concept of 'picnic,' because a picnic, after all, is a kind of escape. You can go with more people and just have fun and share a moment or a fried egg."He drew inspiration for the songs on Picnic from his own lucid dreams, building simple stories for the lyrics. In fact, he tried to keep everything simple, including his lo-fi working conditions: He recorded all of the vocals with his laptop's factory-installed microphone. On the whole, the musical and spiritual departure fits both Litmanovich's lyrics and his carefree creative process. "This album is not a concept album," he says. "I made some albums before that were strongly conceptual. But for this album, I just tried to be more intuitive and not so intellectual."...
Then here are a few of the latest reviews on Picnic:
Picnic debuted at 108 on the CMJ Top 200
"The album is a real unexpected treat, and Cineplexx are the kind of crush that might just bloom into a full on love affair." / All Music Blog
- 4 stars, AMG Album Pick - / All Music Guide
Picnic (review) "Perfect for that surreal Sunday in the park" / Newsday
Picnic (review) "7.5… Litmanovich's closest musical comrade might be Cornelius. The two share fascinations with exotica, soundfields and meticulous rhythmic organization." /Paperthinwalls.com
Picnic (review) "easy-going, soft pop…sprinkling in elements of Spanish folk and bossa nova" / IndiePages
Picnic (review) ...It would have been nice if the length was longer, but I suppose it was intentional in that it serves as a nice referesher by sitting in between the self-titled track and the outstanding "Droga Paliativa". "A Mi Lado" works with a simplistic drum loop and the subdued backing of an acoustic and electric guitar. Litmanovich's vocals are in full force here, constructing a haunting melody that complements the placid guitar arrangements nicely. Boasting plenty of memorable material with 15 tracks, Picnic may very well go down as one of the most uniquely engaging releases of the year... / Obscure sound (read more)
Picnic (review) ...Based off of the songs that appear on the Myspace page, I am so far most enamored with the title track, a dreamy, yet slightly off kilter song whose vocals kind of make it sound as if it were recorded on an island inhabited by friendly ghosts. The carefree employment of xylophone helps this effect nicely. Also helping the beautiful oddness of this track is the presence of Jad Fair. All of the tracks make smart use of electronic elements as well as human elements (i.e. you can dance to most of them!) All maintain a sweet breezy pace. Most of the songs are sung in Spanish, the notable exception on the Myspace page being "Tiger Trap" (oh so deliciously twee in both the story detailed in the song, AND the likely reference to the band of the same name, um, and the fact that Duglas Stewart is singing it.) I simply can't wait until I am able to hear the entire thing. Until then, I will most likely be finding my way here, a lot... / Square Girls (read more)
Picnic (review) ...warm and friendly pop for a springtime picnic. If you like Belle and Sebastian, The Radio dept, BMX Bandits, Camera Obscura, Little Name, Jens Lekman, Flaming Lips, Teenage Fanclub or the Beach Boys, you'll love Cineplexx. It's a wonderful album, and a perfect companion to the coming days of Spring. "Picnic" is a wonderful collection of pop songs, with Sebastian's warm and almost whispered Spanish vocals in front, full of pretty melodies, lush strings and harmonies, but far underneath all the niceness, you'll discover more noisy, fuzzy and strange elements, - sometimes also darker - , which makes the album more interesting in the long run. The title track, where Jad Fair is involved, is almost psychedelic in its playful and dreamy arrangement. Wonderful!?This is one of the album's really strong sides: The more you listen to it, the more you'll discover. / EARDRUMSMUSIC.com
Picnic (review) ...Una colección de pequeñas composiciones pop. "A mi lado" se trata de un tema precioso, pegadizo y realmente cautivador. /Palabelia.com.

Picnic will be release by Portia Records for the US and Canada
Hi! Just wanted to share this great news,
My album Picnic will be released for the US & Canada by Portia Records on June 24.
And it will be available on mp3 for US, Canada & Mexico as well. I am very happy and hope to be touring around US and Mexico before 2008 endings...
Sebastian Litmanovich, the brains behind Cineplexx, is an Argentinean expatriate living in Barcelona both as a musician and as an accomplished graphic artist. For the past ten years, he has traveled around the world, channeling his passion for art and bringing his music to such cities as Buenos Aires, New York City, and Tokyo. On June 24th, Sebastian will release his most recent artistic accomplishment, Picnic (Portia Records).
On his 5th overall album and Portia debut, Cineplexx enlists the help of friends Duglas Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Jad Fair and Federico Aubele to create this beautiful 13-song collection that evokes the lush arrangements of the Beach Boys and the pop sensibilities of Belle & Sebastian and Elliott Smith. Similar to that of Cineplexx's previous album Pequeños Accidentes Domésticos, which Rolling Stone Argentina called "beautiful" and "contagious," Picnic is filled with throng of strings, wall-of-sound-like arrangements and Sebastian's whispered Spanish vocals.
Yet, Picnic is somewhat of a departure for the electronically inclined Cineplexx. With more pop structure and attention paid to fusing analog orchestration with his blips and beeps, Sebastian has delivered a record to our shores that will surely enchant its listeners.
See what the critics are saying about Cineplexx....
"a sonic appliance of doubtless quality" Tony Rubies / El Lorito
"with whispered Spanish vocals and wind-blown production, Litmanovich's records are vivid evocations of a desiccated Patagonian landscape." Shift Magazine
"the music of Cineplexx is not only unique, but deeply affecting." EYE Magazine
"a heir of the sonorous sketchs of Eno" – El Pais
I wish you a fantastic 2008, with a new album out now, and a new song on myspace! CINEPLEXXPICNIC
MOLECULA RECORDS (MEXICO)

Picnic, the new album is definitively pop with mix influences from the Flaming Lips, BMX Bandits, Teenage Fan club, The Ronnettes, Margo Guryan, Joe Meek, Beach Boys, Jens Lekman, Magnetic Fields, Lemans & Family, among others. An album seeking for the overall beauty, a musical reinterpretation of the simple pop melody with low-fi symphony arrangements.
Picnic has important contributions from Duglas Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (teenage Fanclub), Jad Fair (Half Japanese), Federico Aubele, Sebastian Kramer, Leumann, Earzumba & the members of cineplexx’s band The odeons.
